We tip our hats to Washington County Sheriff's Department Sergeant Matt Hein and Gibson Township Fire Department Captain Andrew Mull. Jasper Combs (76) fell through the ice while fishing on Elk Creek Lake yesterday, and despite a valiant but unsuccessful rescue attempt by a fellow fisherman, Combs was left clinging to the ice for nearly 45 minutes and rapidly losing strength. Upon their arrival, Sgt. Hein and Capt. Mull quickly ran nearly 1/2 mile through the woods around the lake, and stepped onto the frozen surface. They were able to throw Combs a rope and pull him back onto the ice and to shore where they began rendering aid. They then assisted in carrying him back around the lake to a waiting ambulance. There is zero doubt that Sgt. Hein's and Capt. Mull's selfless actions saved Mr. Combs' life. Thank you, gentlemen.
